United States singer and songwriter Katy Perry has teamed up with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to bring attention to the situation of children in Madagascar, one of the poorest countries in the world.

Her trip began in a slum area of the capital Antananarivo, where she visited a child protection centre and met abused and abandoned children and young mothers receiving support and counseling. More than three out of four children in Madagascar live in extreme poverty, making them vulnerable to exploitation.

Perry also visited a pre-school and a primary school that was destroyed by a tropical cyclone. The school had been made from sticks and thatched roofing; UNICEF replaced it with a solid building.

Madagascar is still recovering from a political crisis that began in 2009, after which most international donors froze development aid to the country, forcing the Government to make drastic cuts in public spending. The cuts affected basic services such as health care and primary education

Schooling rates in Madagascar are alarmingly low, with only three out of every 10 children completing primary school, and a majority of teachers not having completed any formal training.

The ‘Fireworks’ singer also visited a nutrition centre in the Androranga village, where UNICEF is tackling chronic malnutrition, a serious problem in Madagascar. The centre, run by a community health worker, identifies cases and works with village mothers to improve children’s nutrition, including focusing on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of a child’s life.

Blessed: Flavour is a man of many styles [Album Review]

Producers- Master Kraft, Dekumzy, Wizboyy, Del B, Selebobo, J Stunt and M Jay

Record Label- 2Nite Ent

Running Time- 1 Hour, 53 seconds

Flavour Is A Man of Many Styles.

Flavour is a man that keeps up with his name. He might be a contemporary highlife singer but what has made him move beyond the South Eastern region of Nigeria and become a mainstay in Nigeria’s pop charts is his ability to infuse other genres of music into his unique brand of contemporary highlife.

His 18 track album Blessed is filled with songs showcasing his mix of highlife with other styles of music. Take for instance ‘Black Is Beautiful’ a song about a dark skinned woman who ‘shines like a morning light’. The beat crafted by Master Kraft leans towards reggae while Flavour sings his Palm Wine music on top of it. ‘Baby Oku’ showcases the influence of urban music on Flavour’s sound as he incorporates the popular reggae ‘Lord Have Mercy’ chant and Yoruba phrases on the Dekumzy-produced song.

Flavour’s lyrics on this album are very ordinary. They are straight forward, no sense of mystery or poetry around them. ‘Baby you too soji, your back na fire fire, you come dey show dem fire fire’ sings Flavour on Baby Oku and ‘Black Is Beautiful’ would have been a greater song if not for the easy lyrics.
Flavour’s lyrics however do not hinder him as they help him craft songs that are easy to understand. Without his mastery of other genres they might have been a problem.

Flavour loves the ladies (and their backside) and this is a strong theme on the LP. ‘Ikwokrikwo’ with its stirring Eastern strings showcases a Flavour transfixed with the behind of a woman who he calls his ‘Vitamin C’. The singer peppers the track with a little of RnB. ‘Shake’ as the name implies is a rump shaker highlife style. Sticking to the dancing theme also, Flavour composes ‘Sweet Tomato’ a contemporary highlife song which accommodates the West African pop dance moves- Etighi and Azonto. Clearly Flavour is a master at mixing genres together and he doesn’t try to hide it on ‘Blessed’.

On ‘Ifem N’eli’ he takes a stab at old Highlife music which comes out well thanks to the sweet horns incorporated by M Jay. Another song with a throwback feel is ‘Chinny Baby’ which sounds like an 80’s Nigerian pop song. The vibe of the song might be dated but the song is a success.
When Flavour isn’t singing about women, he sings about how being a man is not easy, he talks about destiny, enemies and fake friends. ‘Destiny’ is a pseudo Gospel track which predictably is about one being a master of his destiny, how destiny can’t be stopp ed, being saved from poverty etc.

Sometimes Flavour’s album sounds a tad bit repetitive. While he shows dexterity on Blessed some of his producers don’t -which gives the LP a slight been here-heard that feeling.

This however doesn’t stop you from enjoying the album as Flavour has enough tricks to hold you down. While there are a lot of one dimensional acts in the game now, Flavour’s mastery of many genres has allowed him produce an LP worth listening to. And that, is what makes him blessed.

‘My daughter is more important than everything else’ – Omawumi

The talented vocalist in an interview on Rubbin’ Minds, aired on Channels TV told show host Ebuka how she feels about giving birth to her daughter Kamila at the peak of her music career.

Answering Ebuka’s question on whether she regrets bringing a child to the world during that period of her life, Omawumi responded ‘She was more important than everything and everyone else‘.

She also confessed that people close to her had tried to talk her out of it but she that she ’had a blind conviction that nobody could talk her out of’. ‘Of course people tried to talk me out of it…I said let the career fall, I will back my daughter and sell tomatoes. She is more important to me‘.

She also explained her marital status: ’I didn’t come with that intention to be a single parent, however, now that I’ve found myself in that position, I’m going to enjoy and walk in the stride until when God brings the man that will come and you know…‘

I Hate Sex! (Read this and tell what you think).

My first sexual encounter was with a fellow girl. No, i am not a Lesbian, contrary to what you might think as you read this. I was 14 years old, what did i know?
I let her kiss me. Then i let her fondle my breasts. I fondled hers too. I liked it.
Then as time went on, she began to say things like “I love you”  “I miss you”  “I can’t do without you”  that was when i knew there was trouble. We stopped talking to each other.
Did i like boys? Hell yeah

Sadness-of-Black-Folks

I am not inclining that i am Bi-sexually oriented either, no that’s not what i mean. I have always liked boys.
My first real sexual experience was with my boyfriend at 19. I heard so much about sex prior to that and watched a lot of “Blue Film” at the time. Needless to say, everything did not check out in reality when i finally had sex.

It was the most painful, annoying experience ever and i just hated it.

The part where he kissed and sucked on me down there felt very good. So every time after that, i found solace in the outpouring of emotions and the tenderness that i felt from him giving me oral stimulation in every form.

It began to feel like every time we had sex all i wanted was some good head, then I’d pretend to enjoy it while he made love to me.
Then we broke up!
And it was another boyfriend after that and then another. Yet the same “What-is-really-going-on-here” Sexual experience.
Here’s what happens:

-It starts off great at first

-I love the feel of his man organ in my vagina..that’s when it starts

-Then i quickly become dry down there and lubrication becomes so difficult, then it gets painful

-From here on, i just zero my mind on whats happening and drift off into my own thoughts waiting for it to be over..all the time moaning absent-mindedly while he humps and grinds my wells.

At this point i ask you please, Do i have a Problem or do i just hate sex?

3 months ago, i was with my friend at a restaurant having dinner when she began to caress my leg with hers from beneath the table. I looked up at her and she winked at me. I immediately felt a rush of blood vibrate through my body. She signaled for me to join her in the rest room which i did without hesitation.

We had barely even closed the door when she pushed me against the wall and began to kiss me. I kissed her back, hurriedly, in absolute excitement as my Vagina burst into floods of juices between my legs. She reached for it, gliding her fingers into me effortlessly. It felt so good i could barely stand straight against the wall.

She did it with every care in the world, touching the right spots i didn’t even know existed.
This quick encounter ended just as quickly as it began, it was shorter than my full sex experiences with men but i would remember it forever!

Now again, i ask, Do i hate sex or do i just hate sex with men?

There is No Shame in Being Unwed

There is No Shame in Being Unwed

Zednani February 20, 2013 0
...
…
In Nigeria there is a stigma that comes from being unwed. Especially when you reach a certain age. Especially when you are a female. When these two instances happen to coincide you are usually deemed a lost cause, you become the subject of many a prayer and the object of many a pitying glance. The lack of that three-letter title, “Mrs.” affords you disrespect, sympathy and even prophesies of doom.

In Nigeria a man is seen as a woman’s shield, her shelter, her protector; and when one does not possess this armor one is open to attacks both of misguided kindness and downright cruelty. Religious individuals, of which Nigeria is full, say prayers for you, drag you from shrine to pulpit and introduce you to many a pastor hoping that someone can break the “curse.” There are talks of what you may have done wrong
in the past to evoke this present tragedy, there are speculations as to whether you were too picky – either by being too superficial or seeking something too substantial back when you were a “spring chick(en)” and how you are to blame for your current situation. There is much ado about nothing.

Although the topic generates much discussion and much revenue (through the production of movies, the traffic on radio talk shows and advice columns, etc.), all the hurrah and the panic are baseless. Congregations hardly need to go up in spiritual arms, nor do families need to fall down in grief. Self-hate and regret need not be woven into a noose around the single person’s neck. There may be a stigma,
but being single is certainly not a curse and there is no need to pick apart one’s family lineage or attempt to identify the demon that must first be exorcised before one can enter a state of holy matrimony – most times single is just single.

Perhaps one is single because they are set in their ways and those they have met would more likely compete with them than complete them. Perhaps the individual would rather make life choices without having to weigh them against the plans and passions of another. Perhaps the person would rather not compromise, commit or cater to another in that fashion. Perhaps the person has loved and lost and is unable
or unwilling to love again in that manner. Perhaps someone does not want to settle for less than love and has not come across his or her “better half” yet. Whatever the supposition, the fact remains that being single does not come from the devil and marriage is not synonymous with being blessed or divine or better off.
There are many marriages that end in divorce, death or destruction and when people are attempting to shove you down the aisle they tend to gloss over that part. There are many unmarried situations that end in self-fulfillment, Then again there are marriages that indeed embody “marital bliss” and lead to the creation of the “ideal family.” It all comes down to the individuals within the institution. It is
important to bear in mind that all relationships are atypical and unique – there is not one kind of marriage, just like there is not one kind of single. The right to choose exists for less life altering/ending decisions than Roe vs. Wade, and the right to be married or single is indeed at the discretion of the individual.
No two individuals will travel along the same exact life journey, and just because someone may not be on the same path as you that does not mean they are lost. Just because they may have passed the fork in the road towards “Marriage” and gone straight on their single journey does not make them a pariah or a prayer point.
There is only one time for marriage – the right time. When the two adults who are packing up their individual hearths and homes to become joined as one feel the time is right, then the time is right. No sooner. No later. Ageing does not equate the need to wed. There is no rush. There are talks of biological clocks ticking as a major excuse, but what argument is there for bringing a child into a potentially unhealthy
family? There is none. Marriage can wait and sometimes it can just be thrown out of the equation of an individual’s life completely.

Why do I feel like a traitor to the nation for speaking on this?

I understand the beauty of what God intended with the institution of marriage, and am keenly aware that ‘he who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favour with the Lord,’ but that does not mean it must be a chapter in the lives of all and sundry. There are so many unhappy singles, not because of their status but because of the pressure that comes along with it, because others are hovering over their
ovaries and counting down their fertile eggs as the years pass by. Then again there are so many miserable marriages that were the result of someone else’s opinion or urging, marriages that rob one of their peace of mind and leave their self esteem in pieces. And we all know that once one weds in Naija, the popular follow up is till death do them part – despite extreme depression or dysfunction that may take up
resident in the unhappy home and lead to the individual dying a thousand deaths inside.

I am all for being wed…or not. I just want the former to be formed on the terms of those signing the certificate and no one else. We all have a right to choose. Don’t be cornered into the argument of “you are getting old” or “you are being too picky.” There is always the single life and all sorts of variations of an existence; there is late marriage, there is adoption, etc.

A marriage certificate will not buy you peace of mind or contentment; and the approval of those who were urging you to enter into the institution surely will not be enough to give you that “happy ever after.”

Stalking? or Simply Protecting your Interests.....Watch it!!

After a very hectic week at work I was looking forward to relaxing over the weekend. For the first time in many Saturdays there was no “Owambe” wedding lined up, no birthday dinners and no dates. After having breakfast, I crawled back into bed and as I was about to turn my phone on silent, it started ringing….. it was my cousin Jumoke. Very wrong timing but I decided to pick up.  Before I finished saying hello she shouted at me telling me to come outside. I hurriedly jumped out of bed and ran out of the house. Unfortunately, my Saturday was not going to be the lazy day I planned.

Now I’m sure you are wondering why I gave up my lazy day so let me explain. Jumoke has been dating this guy called IK for three years and he popped the question two months ago.  She seemed happy until recently when she started complaining about a change in his behavior. He was busier, forgetting dates, making up silly excuses, buying too many gifts (which I thought was a positive thing) and acting extremely secretive.  I told her not to assume negatively and that he might just be planning a fabulous surprise, has cold feet or is just busy. I even showed her D’banj’s “fall in love” video just to prove my point.

Jumoke is very stubborn and I knew my explanation was not going to fly.  As they say a woman in love does better research than the FBI. After carrying out her detective work, she shared some of her findings with me and it was quite evident that something was not just right but all she had was circumstantial evidence. He was either cheating or his “friendship” with a particular girl was too sketchy for a man engaged to be married.  She confronted IK about the situation but he denied adamantly. I expected Jumoke to calm down and ‘trust’ her man but according to her this is Lagos……it doesn’t work that way.

On this particular Saturday, IK had cancelled his date with her and she suspected something was up. The plan was for her to trail IK for the day and I was her accomplice. I felt really bad and jobless but if following her was going to make her happy I agreed to do it. Truth be told, my inquisitiveness did not help me in saying NO either.

During our little adventure I thought to myself…where do you draw the line in attempting to protect your interest in a relationship? Has she gone too far? Is it just an invasion of privacy?
What do you think and how would you react?

Does Love Fluctuate??? Read this!!

...
…
Love, the golden word that binds all and heals all.
Love, just a bit of it would make the world a better place.
Love, that sweet poison which makes us do crazy meaningless things.
Ever seen a full grown man breakdown in public and shed oceans of tears, uncontrollably, without shame, bereft of remorse.
Have you ever lost the desire to eat, sleep, or even keep living over the loss(breakup) of a loved one?
Love, something so special, so divine, so
sanguine, damn near perfect.

God’s greatest gift to man(more so
evident in the sacrifice of his only son)
In the past, I used to have a witty and somewhat realistic definition of love; ‘A four letter word that guys use to get into girls’ pants’.

I used to resist and fight love, and even the urge to fall in love. I was so certain of this naive assumption that i brandished it about with careless abandon to whomever cared to pay attention, until nature had its way with me. I fell in love with a beautiful and extremely appealing girl and we didn’t make love until 8months after we started dating(Lol, i wasn’t slow nor impotent). I was deeply in love and i was willing to wait till she was ready emotionally, physically and psychologically.

Obviously this experience changed my rebellious view on love, it killed the fight in me and sent me falling, crashing in love, never to rise again.

Why then should something this beautiful, pure, and selfless fluctuate?

Maybe it is subject to the ever constant ‘change’ or the forever present ‘law of gravity’.
Does love really fluctuate?

I think it does, for me at least, and every other man I know. Anyone who has ever been in a love steeped relationship(the exemption of friends with benefits) must and will have experienced the highs and lows of love. There are periods when the feeling of love is so intense, so thick, so strong, that we(guys) would see an extremely endowed woman with a buttocks the size of Nicki Minaj’s and you won’t even give her a second look. That is love at its best, highest, purest peak. There are times when it(love) is so low you would wonder “what the heck am I doing with her”. At that point, all her previously benign flaws will be magnified in your eyes.

Love certainly has different levels of intensity and it would only be hypocritical and unrealistic of us to deny this, consequently and unconsciously telling the young ones that it is forever a blissful phenomenon, nah, not possible.
There is fantasy love and true love.
Fantasy love might not fluctuate, might not waiver, might even never bicker, but trust me, it is fickle deep down and can’t last, never.
True love on the other hand is sometimes sweet, sometimes sad, sometimes fraught with ups and downs, but at the end of the day, you know you have something real, worth fighting for.
Love tends to fluctuate over weeks, months, and years. Basically, over time. Even in one day or an hour, love can and does fluctuate.
Tell me you’ve never been with your partner for about a couple of hours and not felt bored and indifferent at some point, hell, even tired of them.
You’re nodding, yeah , that’s it, that’s the fluctuation.
The fluctuation does not mean that love disappears from the relationship.

It is natural for love to fluctuate from time to time in human relationships, whether we want it or not, like it or not.

Some say if love fluctuates,  it never was love,  but I say , if love doesn’t fluctuate , doesn’t waiver,
how do you test its limit?,
its depth?,
its validity?
How do you?

My friends, the moment you realize that love fluctuates in relationships, the better equipped you will be, relationship-wise.
